Gov. Lynch Calls on Washington to Provide Increased Home Heating Fuel Assistance
Increased Federal LIHEAP Commitment Needed to Avert Winter Fuel Crisis for New Hampshire Families
July 9, 2008
CONCORD - Gov. John Lynch today joined his fellow New England Governors in calling on the federal government to increase its heating aid commitment for New England families.
Gov. Lynch said New England’s Governors must work collaboratively with their respective congressional delegations in order to get a commitment from Washington for an increase in funding for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). The Governors also called for a commitment from the two presumptive nominees for president.
"The rising cost of fuel and a continuing national economic downturn is having an impact on hard-working families in New Hampshire and across New England. It is July, but already many families are concerned they will not be able to afford to heat their homes, or that they may need to choose between other essentials such as medication or food in order to stay warm this winter," Gov. Lynch said. more... |

Comparing Energy Prices
Rising energy prices often lead people to consider switching to a different fuel for heating and hot water needs. However, the different units in which fuels are sold - gallons and therms, for example - combined with price volatility can make a meaningful comparison of different fuels’ actual price per unit of energy difficult. Installing a new heating system on the basis current fuel prices alone may not produce expected savings, but fuel price comparisons can be one useful factor in selecting a new system if a replacement is needed, or when planning to add a secondary or backup heating system. Note: When using the energy price calculator, you can enter current prices by referring to the Fuel Prices box on OEP’s home page.
Go to the Energy Price Calculator or check the Equivalent Fuel Price Comparison chart. |

Power Play - A new pipeline from Rochester to Durham will heat the UNH campus in a more efficient, eco-friendly fashion
Concord Monitor March 2, 2008
The Waste Management landfill and recycling facility in Rochester handles a lot of waste, but its practices are hardly wasteful. The massive landfill that holds tons of trash is tapped for the methane and carbon dioxide gas that is produced when the trash inside the landfill decomposes. About 40 percent of the gas is processed, turned into energy and sold to electric companies to power 9,000 homes. But more than half the gas is simply burned off, or flared, because the facility's two power plants can't process it all. When Waste Management started looking for a better way to use the leftover gas, it turned to one of its neighbors, the University of New Hampshire. more... |
