2017 Governor's Arts Awards
Special Council Award
In Memory of Commissioner Van McLeod, Concord
Van McLeod led the Department of Cultural Resources for 24 years, providing outstanding service to the people of New Hampshire through the Department’s several divisions, each of which supported different aspects of culture in the state: arts, film and digital media, historical resources, and libraries. Van well understood how important each of these elements is to our state’s identity, and the profound impact they have on our economy. A tireless promoter, he knew the importance of “telling the story” of New Hampshire, of our culture, our organizations and our people, realizing that stories are how people connect, and that strength and success will come from that. As well known for his humor and compassion as he was for his devotion to supporting culture statewide, Van won many awards and accolades throughout his career, but perhaps the award he cherished most was the recognition that he was a great guy, universally liked and respected.
